23 Hours: Archives of Mamak Signages and Mementos

A Mamak is a type of casual, usually open-air eatery in Singapore (and Malaysia), run predominantly by Indian Muslim owners.

The menu blends South Indian, Malay, and sometimes Chinese influences - prata, briyani, maggi goreng, and the ever-present teh tarik. Affordable and often open late into the night, mamaks have become an unintentional third space for people to gather to eat and hang out, bringing people of all walks together. The term "Mamak" comes from a Tamil word meaning "uncle," and in Singapore, it's colloquially used to refer to Indian Muslim eateries.
